Henriette is the French feminine of a name that joins the words for a home and a ruler, and one of its bearers has a state named after her. Maryland was named for Henrietta Maria, the French queen of an English king, and so were a river and a city, which is a considerable footprint for a woman whose own reign was mostly spent raising money for a war her husband lost.

Where it comes from

The story of Henriette

She was a French princess married to an English king at fifteen, Catholic in a country that had spent a century being frightened of Catholics, and blamed for a great deal that was not her doing and some that was. During the civil war she pawned the crown jewels in the Netherlands to buy arms, crossed the Channel with them under fire, and joined her husband's army in the field. After his execution she lived in France on a small pension. The colony chartered in her lifetime carries her name, as does a river in Australia named much later by somebody with a sense of history, and the American state's name is the only thing most people now connect her to.

Meaning

home ruler

Two Germanic elements, one meaning a home, an estate or an enclosure and one meaning a ruler, and the reading is settled. It is a domestic compound rather than a martial one, which is unusual in that name stock. The French feminine ending contributes affection rather than sense.

How the name formed

  1. Two Germanic elements meaning home and ruler
  2. Henry as the standard English royal name
  3. Henriette as the French feminine
  4. A colony and a state named for one of its bearers

Fashion outlook

Henriette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Hettie and Etta are two complete names available from one certificate.
  • It is used unchanged in French and German, which is a wide range.
  • The meaning is domestic and concrete, which is rare in Germanic naming.
What to consider
  • The h is silent in French and pronounced in English, which is a real difference.
  • Henrietta is the commoner English form and this will be converted into it.
  • It is firmly of the nineteenth century in American records.
