Where it comes from

The story of Henretta

The best-known American bearer never knew the name would outlive her by this much. Cells taken from Henrietta Lacks during treatment for cancer at a Baltimore hospital in the middle of the last century turned out to divide without stopping, the first human cells ever to do so in a laboratory. They went into the polio vaccine, into cancer research, into space; they have been grown by the ton and sold by the vial in every country with a laboratory. Nobody asked her, nobody told her family for a quarter of a century, and nobody paid them. Her name is now attached to more scientific papers than almost any person's, and the ethical rules about consent that came afterwards were written partly because of what was done to her.

Meaning

Ruler of the household

The Germanic elements are heim, a home or estate, and ric, a ruler, so the name claims authority over a house rather than over a country. French turned it into Henri, added the diminutive -ette to make a woman's form, and English then added a Latin -a on the end of that, which is why the name has two feminine endings stacked and needs neither.

Henretta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Henretta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three strong, well-established short forms, all of which work as names on their own.
  • The full name is recognizable in French, Italian, Spanish, German and Dutch.
  • It is formal on paper and easy in speech, which is a combination not many long names manage.
What to consider
  • Henrietta is the standard spelling and will be written instead of this one nearly every time.
  • The name is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American use.
  • Two feminine endings are stacked in it, which makes the full name long for everyday use.
