Helyn
Feminine
Helyn is Helen with the vowel that Tudor writers preferred, and the name underneath it belongs to the most argued-over woman in European literature. Two of the things everybody knows about her are not quite true: the famous line about her face is not Homer's, and in one of the oldest surviving versions of the story she never goes to Troy at all.

The story of Helyn
Christopher Marlowe wrote the line. In his play about Faustus, the scholar asks for Helen and, when she is conjured, says the sentence about the face that launched a thousand ships and burnt the topless towers of Ilium. It is the most quoted description of a woman in English and Homer has nothing like it — the Iliad barely describes her at all, and its most famous moment about her beauty is a group of old men watching her walk past and agreeing, quietly, that they understand why the war is being fought. Euripides went further still: in his version a phantom goes to Troy and the real Helen spends the whole war in Egypt, blameless and furious about her reputation.

Not established
Helen is one of the oldest names in Europe and one of the least explained. A connection to the Greek word for torch or for the moon has been proposed for centuries and has never been demonstrated; the name may well be older than Greek and belong to something the language absorbed. The spelling with a y is a written habit rather than a different name — English scribes and printers used y freely where an i or an e would do, and a few of those spellings survived into the modern record as separate names.

Fashion outlook
Helyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is one of the most established in Europe and needs no explanation anywhere.
- Nell, Lyn and Ellie are all available, covering three different registers.
- The spelling is rare while the name is universal, which is a comfortable place to sit.
- Helen is overwhelmingly commoner and will be written instead, always.
- The y reads as a deliberate flourish to some people and as an error to others.
- The name has no established meaning, and the torch reading she will be given is a guess.
