The story of Helma
English has two helms. One, a helmet, gave German names like Wilhelm and Wilhelmina, and Helma is a short form of them. The other is the helm that steers a ship: Old English helma meant the tiller or rudder, a separate word that only happens to look the same, and taking the helm has meant taking charge ever since. The Finnish name Helmi, which looks close, means 'pearl' and is not related.

Fashion outlook
Helma sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
