Helga and Olga are the same name. Not related, not cousins — the same word, carried east by Scandinavian traders and soldiers who settled among the Slavs and left their names behind when everything else about them had been absorbed. The change from H to O is what Slavic mouths did with a sound they did not have.

Where it comes from

The story of Helga

The adjective did not start out religious. In Old Norse it described something set apart and not to be touched — a place under protection, an assembly ground where weapons were forbidden, a person whose safety was guaranteed. The sense is closer to inviolable than to pious, and it belonged to law and custom before it belonged to any church. When Christianity arrived the word was the obvious one to translate holy with, and it narrowed to that meaning and stayed there. So a name that now reads as devout began by meaning something more like untouchable, which is a rather different thing to call a daughter and arguably a better one.

Meaning

holy, blessed

Old Norse, the feminine of the same adjective that gives the man's name Helgi. The word is well attested and its sense is not in dispute, though what it meant before Christianity is a rather more interesting question.

Helga sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 45 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Helga sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is old, dignified and more interesting than it first appears.
  • The spelling is short and needs no explaining anywhere in Europe.
  • It is instantly placeable without being difficult for English speakers.
What to consider
  • In America it reads as strongly foreign, which cuts both ways.
  • The generation that used it here is now very old.
  • It has picked up some unfortunate stock associations in English-language fiction.
