Where it comes from

The story of Hedwig

Jadwiga was eleven when she was crowned in Krakow in the fourteenth century, under the title rex rather than regina, because Polish law recognized only a king. She ruled in her own right, married the Grand Duke of Lithuania on terms she partly set, and the union of the two states that followed created the largest country in Europe for the next two hundred years. She founded a university with her own jewelry and died at twenty-five. The German form of her name, Hedwig, came to America with German and Silesian families; the Polish form stayed Polish, and most English speakers have never connected the two.

Meaning

battle

Both halves of the Germanic compound are words for war or combat, which makes the name unusually emphatic and unusually redundant.

Hedwig sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 159 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Hedwig sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standing name across Germany, Poland, Hungary and the Netherlands.
  • The historical figure behind it is exceptional and well documented.
  • The meaning is unambiguous, which is rare for a Germanic compound.
What to consider
  • A very famous fictional owl carries the name, and every child will know it.
  • English speakers will say the w wrongly on first meeting.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century in America.
