Heaven
Feminine · Old English roots · “heaven”
Heaven is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 30,361 girls against 443 boys since 1880.
Heaven is the plain English word, carried over unchanged: from Old English heofon, the sky, and then the dwelling place of God. It sits in a long line of English names taken straight from the vocabulary — Grace, Hope, Faith, Honor — words lifted out of the sentence and given to a person. Two syllables, one obvious spelling, and no one ever has to ask what it means.

The story of Heaven
English-speaking parents have been naming children from the dictionary for centuries: the Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries gave the world Faith, Hope, Prudence and Charity, taking abstract nouns and treating them as names. Heaven is a much later arrival to that tradition, appearing in American records in the second half of the twentieth century and rising alongside other word names of devotion and aspiration such as Destiny and Serenity. It has been strongest in the American South and West, with Texas, California and Florida leading. American parents also took the word and reversed it, producing Nevaeh — a spelling that only makes sense because Heaven came first.

The Jolene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Heaven's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jolene climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jolene's path sketches the road Heaven is walking now.
Heaven sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled and pronounced correctly on the first attempt by any English speaker — it is a word everyone already knows.
- One standard spelling, with no competing variants to correct for life.
- Belongs to an established English tradition of word names, alongside Grace, Hope and Faith.
- Familiar to the ear while rare enough in practice that sharing a classroom with another is unlikely.
- Has close counterparts used as names in Spanish, French and Italian, so the idea travels even when the word does not.
- It carries an unmistakable religious meaning. That is the point for many families, but it is not something the child can set aside in a job interview or a classroom introduction, and some people will read a whole worldview into it.
- The word also belongs to the language of loss — 'gone to heaven', 'in heaven now'. Most people never make the connection out loud, but it exists.
- Its use clusters in a fairly narrow stretch of recent decades, so the name is closely tied to one generation rather than reading as ageless.
- Some will hear the reversed spelling Nevaeh behind it, since that name grew directly out of this one.
