The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Heaven
heaven — the sky; in Christian use, the dwelling place of God
From Old English heofon, through Middle English heven. The name is simply the modern English word, used as it stands.
heofon (Old English) → heven (Middle English) → Heaven
How it traveled
English-speaking parents have been naming children from the dictionary for centuries: the Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries gave the world Faith, Hope, Prudence and Charity, taking abstract nouns and treating them as names. Heaven is a much later arrival to that tradition, appearing in American records in the second half of the twentieth century and rising alongside other word names of devotion and aspiration such as Destiny and Serenity.
Priscilla
ancient, venerable
A Latin diminutive of Priscus, "former" or "of old" — literally something closer to "little venerable one." The affectionate -illa ending is the same one behind Camilla and Domitilla.
Priscus → Prisca → Priscilla
How it traveled
The Roman family name Priscus produced the feminine Prisca, and Prisca produced the affectionate diminutive Priscilla. Both forms appear in the New Testament for the same woman — Paul writes Prisca, Acts writes Priscilla — which is why the longer form traveled so far in Christian Europe.

Out loud, and in short
Heaven
HEV-un
Stress on the first syllable, exactly like the ordinary word. English speakers need no instruction; speakers of other languages may need the spelling explained, since the 'ea' here sounds like 'e'.
- Hev — An informal clipping used among friends and family; the name is most often used in full.
- Heavenly — An affectionate lengthening rather than a shortening, used casually; also given as a name in its own right in the US.
Priscilla
pri-SIL-uh
Stress on the second syllable. The double L is pronounced as a single L in English; in Spanish and Portuguese the name is spelled with one L and one S — Priscila — and pronounced pree-SEE-la.
- Cilla — The long-standing English short form, taken from the stressed middle; also used on its own as a given name in Britain and Scandinavia.
- Pri — Standard informal short form in Brazilian Portuguese and common among Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking families in the US.
- Pris — Clipped and informal, mostly within families and among friends.
- Prissy — An old family diminutive; note that it doubles as an English adjective meaning prim or fussy.
- Also Silla.

The trade-offs, name by name
Heaven
Strengths
- Spelled and pronounced correctly on the first attempt by any English speaker — it is a word everyone already knows.
- One standard spelling, with no competing variants to correct for life.
- Belongs to an established English tradition of word names, alongside Grace, Hope and Faith.
To consider
- It carries an unmistakable religious meaning. That is the point for many families, but it is not something the child can set aside in a job interview or a classroom introduction, and some people will read a whole worldview into it.
- The word also belongs to the language of loss — 'gone to heaven', 'in heaven now'. Most people never make the connection out loud, but it exists.
- Its use clusters in a fairly narrow stretch of recent decades, so the name is closely tied to one generation rather than reading as ageless.
Priscilla
Strengths
- A documented line from Roman Latin through the New Testament to the present, with no gaps to explain.
- Recognized across English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French, with only a one-letter shift between them.
- Several established short forms — Cilla, Pri, Pris — none of them invented on the spot.
To consider
- "Prissy" is both a natural short form and an ordinary English adjective for prim or fussy. Most families simply steer toward Cilla or Pri, but it is worth knowing the word is there.
- Spelling gets tested regularly: one S, two Ls, and the Spanish and Portuguese Priscila has neither doubled. Expect to spell it aloud, and expect Pricilla on some forms.
- It is still strongly represented among older generations, so some people will place it with adults rather than with children — though the same steadiness means it has never dropped out of use or become a period costume.
