Where it comes from

The story of Haskell

Asketill was a common Norse name in the Danelaw, and it left England a scattering of surnames — Haskell, Astell, Ashkettle — as the sounds collapsed over the centuries. Quite separately, Ashkenazi families used Haskel as the daily name paired with the Hebrew Yehezkel, and brought it to America in the migrations at the end of the nineteenth century. By then the English surname was already being used as a first name in the American South, in the way that English surnames were. The two streams arrived within a generation of each other and the record cannot tell them apart.

the god's cauldron, or God strengthens

The Norse Asketill joins the name of the gods to ketill, a cauldron or sacrificial vessel. The Yiddish Haskel is a form of Yehezkel, Ezekiel, whose Hebrew means God strengthens. Nothing on a modern certificate says which line a Haskell belongs to.

Haskell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 104 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Haskell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both syllables are ordinary English and the name is read correctly at sight.
  • It works as a surname and as a first name, which suits families that use both.
  • It carries two entirely separate and well-documented histories, either of which a family can claim honestly.
What to consider
  • There is no way to tell from the name alone which of its two origins is yours.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys in the United States.
  • It reads as a name of the early twentieth century.

Nobody names a baby alone.
