The story of Haskel
The book he gives his name to is the strangest in the Hebrew Bible. It opens with a vision of wheels within wheels covered in eyes and creatures with four faces, contains an extended and deliberately shocking allegory about an unfaithful city, has the prophet lie on his side for months as a piece of performed argument, and includes a valley of dry bones that reassemble while he watches. Rabbinic tradition restricted who was allowed to read the opening chapter and at what age. It is also the source of a great deal of later mystical literature, most of which he would probably not have recognized.
Meaning
God strengthens
Hebrew Yehezkel joins a verb about strengthening to the divine element, so the name is a statement about God rather than about the child. It reached this form through Yiddish, where the name was worn down and the h moved to the front; the single l in this spelling is a further American simplification of the surname.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is why the single l here and the doubled one in the surname are said identically.

Fashion outlook
Haskel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with a documented Hebrew line behind it.
- The meaning is clear and can be given to a child in two words.
- It is genuinely uncommon while containing nothing unfamiliar.
- Haskell with two l's is the commoner spelling and will be written instead.
- It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
- It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
