The story of Hashim
Hashim ibn Abd Manaf was the Prophet's great-grandfather and gave his name to the Banu Hashim, the clan Muhammad belonged to; the Hashemite kings of Jordan claim descent from it. The bread-crumbling story is given as the reason for the epithet in the earliest sources. The name is in current American use.
Meaning
one who crushes, breaks bread
From the Arabic hashim, 'one who crushes' or 'breaks into pieces', from hashama. The tradition says Amr ibn Abd Manaf earned the epithet by crumbling bread into broth to feed the Meccans during a famine, and the nickname replaced his name. The word is ordinary Arabic.

The Primo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hashim's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Primo climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Primo's path sketches the road Hashim is walking now.
Hashim sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- That a whole dynasty is named for a man who crumbled bread in a famine is a first-rate story.
- The clan of the Prophet and the Jordanian royal house both carry it.
- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk in English.
- The Hash clipping is unfortunate as an English word.
- It reads as specifically Muslim.
- Hashem is a near-homophone and, in Hebrew, a way of referring to God.
