Where it comes from

The story of Harvy

The pooka is a genuine piece of Irish folklore and the playwright knew it: a shape-shifting spirit, usually an animal, sometimes helpful and sometimes not, and invisible to everybody except the person it has chosen. Putting one in a comedy about a gentle drunk was a good deal cleverer than it looks. The play won a Pulitzer, the film made the rabbit a fixture of American culture, and the name has been slightly comic ever since, which is hard on the several hundred years of Bretons who carried it first.

Meaning

battle-worthy

The name is Breton rather than Norman, from a compound about being fit for battle, and it came to England with Breton followers of the Conqueror. This spelling drops the e that the standard English form keeps, which changes nothing audible — the syllable is unstressed and reduced in both versions.

How the name formed

  1. a Breton compound about being fit for battle
  2. brought to England after the Conquest
  3. Harvey established as an English surname and first name
  4. a 1944 play gives the name to an invisible rabbit
  5. Harvy appears in American records as a shortened spelling

Harvy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 39 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Harvy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
  • Harv is available and has a plainness that suits an adult.
  • The Breton origin is real and unusual among English names.
What to consider
  • Harvey is far commoner and the missing letter will be restored everywhere.
  • The rabbit is a warm association but an unavoidably comic one.
  • It belongs to the oldest layer of the American record.
