Harold was the name of the last Anglo-Saxon king of England and of kings in Norway and Denmark before him. In twentieth-century America its most famous bearer was a comedian: Harold Lloyd, whose bespectacled everyman climbed the outside of a department store in Safety Last! and hung from the hands of a clock over a Los Angeles street, one of the best-known images in silent film. Harolyn joins that name to the -lyn ending that American parents were putting on girls' names, and nobody recorded who first did it.
