Our story of Harlie
Two young men in a Milwaukee shed built a motorized bicycle at the start of the twentieth century, and one of their surnames is now recognized in every country on earth. The company survived the collapse of the American motorcycle industry, a period of very poor quality under conglomerate ownership, and a management buyout, largely on the strength of the sound its engines make, which it once tried to trademark. That is an unusual thing for a name to be attached to: not a person, not a place, but a noise. Anybody in America hearing this name for the first time will think of it, and a child carrying it will spend a certain amount of life being asked whether the parents ride.

The Lauralee test

Line the two peaks up, and Lauralee's path sketches the road Harlie is walking now.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar, so nobody is ever at a loss for how to say it.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- It is short, quick to write and easy for a child to spell early.
- Harley is the far commoner spelling and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
- The motorcycle association is the first one nearly everybody will offer.
- No origin is documented for this spelling, so the meaning question has nothing settled behind it.
