Where it comes from

Our story of Hannia

Ours, offered as ours. Hannah is one of the most consequential names in the Hebrew Bible: her prayer for a child in the first book of Samuel is the model the rabbis took for how prayer should be said, and her song is the pattern for the Magnificat. Hannia extends the name with a Latinate ending in the way Spanish naming extends freely. The grace at the bottom of it is real; the ending is the family's own.

Meaningscholars disagree

grace, favor

The Hann- opening is documented: Hebrew Hannah means grace or favor, and the biblical Hannah's prayer is the model for a whole tradition of petition. Whether Hannia was formed from it or coined independently in Latin American naming is not recorded.

Hannia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 80 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Hannia went to 39 girls in 2025, but Hania, Haniya and Haniyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 200, which makes it the 760th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,020 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 8,036 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 41,212 for Hannia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ana and Nia are both complete names in their own right.
  • Every letter but the h is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
  • A genuinely old Hebrew name stands behind the opening.
What to consider
  • The h is silent in Spanish and sounded in English, which makes two different names.
  • Hannia, Hania and Ania are all in use and get confused.
  • There is no documented meaning for the compound as such.
