The story of Halen
Dutch surnames beginning van are almost always locational, and Halen is a real town in Belgian Limburg as well as a place name in the Netherlands. Families carrying it emigrated to America in the usual nineteenth- and twentieth-century waves. Its move into given names is recent and rests on a rock band whose name made the word familiar to Americans who had never heard of the town; from there it joined the -len group with Hayden, Kaylen and Aden, and it is now given to both boys and girls.
