Hajar
Feminine
Hajar is Hagar in Arabic, and Islamic tradition gives her a far larger place than the Bible does. Left in a dry valley with an infant, she runs seven times between two hills looking for water, and a spring opens; the running is repeated by every pilgrim to Mecca, which makes her the only woman whose actions are re-enacted by millions of people each year.

The story of Hajar
Genesis gives Hagar a handful of chapters and one extraordinary detail: she is the only person in the Hebrew Bible to give God a name. Islamic tradition builds far more, placing her and Ishmael at the founding of Mecca and making her search for water one of the rites of the pilgrimage. The name is given across the Arab world, in Egypt especially, and in Turkish as Hacer and Malay as Hajar. It came to American records with Arab, North African and South Asian families.

Not established
Not settled. The Hebrew Hagar has been read as flight or as stranger, from roots meaning to flee and to sojourn, and both readings look like later interpretations of the story rather than etymologies. An Egyptian origin has been proposed, since the text calls her an Egyptian. Nothing is secure.

About 1 girl in 51,847 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Hajar itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Valen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hajar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Valen climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Valen's path sketches the road Hajar is walking now.
Hajar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries a figure whose story is central in two scriptures and re-enacted annually by millions.
- Two syllables and five letters make it easy to write and say in any language.
- It is used across the Arab world, Turkey, Malaysia and beyond.
- Hajar, Hagar and Hacer are all in use, so records within a family may differ.
- In English the name Hagar is best known through the biblical story, which treats her much less generously.
- Its meaning is genuinely unsettled, so anything given for it online is a guess.
