Where it comes from

The story of Guthrie

The Unassigned Lands in the center of what is now Oklahoma were opened for settlement at noon on 22 April 1889, and around fifty thousand people were waiting at the line. Guthrie, a railway stop with a water tower, had a population in the thousands within hours; by evening lots had been claimed, disputed and traded, and within a week there was a functioning municipal government. Those who slipped across the line early to stake claims were called sooners, which is why Oklahoma is the Sooner State. Guthrie served as the territorial and then the state capital until 1910, when the seal was removed to Oklahoma City overnight. The name is Scottish, from a place in Angus, and reached America as a surname well before any of that.

Guthrie is a Scottish surname from a place in Angus, whose own name is disputed; a Gaelic root meaning windy and one meaning a place of corn have both been proposed. An unrelated Irish surname O Gaothaigh also gives Guthrie. The American peak is 1895.
