Where it comes from

The story of Gryffin

Herodotus reports gold-guarding griffins beyond the Scythians, and one modern theory links the image to fossil Protoceratops skulls in the Gobi. Separately, Gruffudd was a common Welsh name carried by princes. The Gryffin spelling is modern and appears in American records in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

griffin; strong lord

Two routes. From the Greek gryps, 'griffin', through Latin gryphus — the mythical beast. Or from the Welsh Gruffudd, generally read as 'strong lord', which English anglicized as Griffin. Both are genuine and both feed the modern name.

Gryffin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2019, with 97 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

#211
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Gryffin went to 63 boys in 2025, but Griffin and Griffyn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,708, which makes it the 211th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,019 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,000 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 27,112 for Gryffin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That griffin legends may derive from fossil skulls is a first-rate idea.
  • Griff and Fin are two short forms, both with real records.
  • The Welsh route gives it a real princely history.
What to consider
  • Griffin is overwhelmingly the standard spelling.
  • The two origins are unrelated.
  • At least three spellings of the sound are in circulation.
