The name Gene and the word gene come from the same Greek root and met by accident. Eugene is eugenes, well-born, from eu and genos, a race or kind; the biological gene was coined from genos too, at the start of the last century, by a Danish botanist who needed a word. Neither borrowed from the other.

How old is the name Gene?

Gene was already in use when US birth records began in 1880 — it is at least 145 years old. The typical Gene alive today was born around 1942, making them about 83 years old. About 57,500 people named Gene are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Gene most popular?

Gene peaked in 1937, reaching #61 nationally. Today it ranks #2230, 2,169 places below that high. See the whole 1937 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Gene

Eugene spread through the church — several popes carried it — and through Savoy, where a prince of that name was one of the great commanders of his age. It became a widely used American name in the nineteenth century and its short form went independent in the twentieth, which is why so many men called Gene were christened nothing longer. The awkward part of the name's history is the word eugenics, coined in the eighteen-eighties from the same Greek, for a movement whose consequences are not something the name should be asked to carry but which anyone looking the word up will find.

Meaning

well-born

Greek eugenes joins eu, well, with genos, birth, race or kind — so well-born, which is a claim about ancestry rather than character. The same genos gives genus, genesis, generate and the biological gene, which was coined in nineteen-oh-nine from the same root without reference to the name. The derivation of the name is not disputed. The word and the name are cousins that met in English rather than relatives that traveled together.

Gene sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1942, with 3,127 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, four letters, and understood instantly everywhere.
  • Eugene is available as a formal long form with a documented Greek meaning.
  • The connection to the biological word is a genuinely interesting piece of etymology to be able to explain.
What to consider
  • It sounds identical to Jean, which in English is a woman's name, so the name gets misheard on the telephone constantly.
  • The Greek root also produced eugenics, and anyone tracing the word will meet that.
  • It is very strongly associated with the oldest living generations in America.
  • This spelling is recorded for girls too, though so rarely that a girl named Gene will be read as a boy on every form; Jean carries the same sound for a daughter.
