The story of Grabiel
Metathesis is the swapping of two adjacent sounds, and it is one of the ordinary ways words change. Latin miraculum gave Spanish milagro, periculum gave peligro, parabola gave palabra; English got bird from Old English brid and horse from hros. It happens most readily with r and l, which is exactly where Grabiel comes from: the r of Gabriel moves one place forward, producing a form that is regular in the mouth even though it is not standard on paper. Spelling normally suppresses this kind of thing, but names escape spelling reform, which is why the American records hold both forms side by side and why a name book that calls one of them an error is missing what is happening.
