The story of Giulietta
The gens Julia was one of the patrician families of Rome, and its name survived the republic to become an ordinary given name across the Latin world. Italian made Giulio and Giulia, and then Giulietta by the diminutive ending -etta. A sixteenth-century Italian novella set in Verona gave the name to a heroine, English drama took it up, and Juliet, Julieta and Giulietta have all been in use ever since — this spelling most at home in Italy and in Italian-American families.

The Riva test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Giulietta's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Riva climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Riva's path sketches the road Giulietta is walking now.

The trade-off
- The Roman family name behind it is documented for well over two thousand years.
- Four ready short forms, in two languages, all of them complete names.
- Juliet is familiar to every English speaker, so the name is never opaque.
- The gi will be read as a hard g by English speakers until corrected, giving GOO-lee-etta.
- Nine letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
- The Shakespeare association is total and comes with a tragedy attached.
