Where it comes from

Our story of Gery

A Massachusetts governor signed a redistricting bill that produced an electoral district of a spectacularly awkward shape, and a Boston newspaper printed a cartoon of it with wings, claws and a head added, calling it a salamander and then, with his name on the front, a gerrymander. The word was in general use within months and has never left. The governor himself was a signer of the Declaration and a vice president, and this is what he is remembered for. His own name is said with a hard g, which the word has not preserved, so the joke is now mispronounced by everybody including political scientists.

Gery sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 53 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Gery sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, quick to write and easy for a child to learn to spell.
  • The sound is thoroughly familiar, so it is rarely a puzzle.
  • It is rare on paper while sounding entirely ordinary.
What to consider
  • The g is said hard by some readers and soft by others, and the spelling settles neither.
  • Gary, Gerry and Jerry are all far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
