The story of Gerrard
Latinizing a name was standard practice for sixteenth-century scholars, and they usually translated rather than transliterated: Schwarzerdt became Melanchthon, black earth in Greek; Kremer became Mercator, merchant in Latin. Mercator published his world map in 1569 with a projection designed for one purpose, to let a sailor draw a straight line of constant compass bearing, which no earlier map allowed. The cost is the distortion everyone complains about, with Greenland the size of Africa, and the projection is still the basis of most online maps because it preserves local shapes and angles. The name he carried is Germanic, built from words for a spear and for hardiness, and it reached England with the Normans.
