Gerome

The story of Gerome
The painter's family came from Aachen and settled in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Duchy of Brabant, and he took his working name from the town, shortening it to Bosch. His given name was the Dutch form of Jerome, which he latinized on his signature. The saint it honors, the translator of the Vulgate, was one of his subjects: Bosch painted Jerome in the wilderness more than once, and the wilderness in his hands is not a landscape anyone else would recognize. The spelling with a G reflects French practice, where g before e spells the same soft sound as j, so Gerome and Jerome are the same word written twice, and both appear in American records.

The Katsumi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gerome's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Katsumi climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Katsumi's path sketches the road Gerome is walking now.
