Where it comes from

The story of Gavyn

Gawain is Arthur's nephew and the most courteous of the knights in the earlier tradition, before French romance demoted him in Lancelot's favor. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written in the north-west Midlands around 1400, is generally counted among the greatest poems in English. Scots took the name as Gavin, and it has been well used there for centuries; Gavyn is a modern respelling.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Gawain's origin is unsettled. Welsh Gwalchmai, hawk of May, is generally taken as the source, though the sound change is difficult. Readings from a word for a white hawk have also been offered. None is established.

Gavyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 390 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Gavyn went to 25 boys in 2025, but Gavin is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,150, which makes it the 290th most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,849 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,485 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 68,323 for Gavyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Arthurian figure with a genuinely great poem attached.
  • Gav is a plain short form that works from childhood on.
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
What to consider
  • Gavin is the standard spelling and will be written for him constantly.
  • The meaning is genuinely unknown despite the name's literary weight.
  • The y adds nothing to the sound and invites correction.
