Gadiel
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “God is my fortune”
Gadiel is a Hebrew name written into the Book of Numbers, where Gaddiel son of Sodi represents the tribe of Zebulun among the twelve men sent to scout Canaan. It ends in the same -el — God — that closes Gabriel, Daniel and Michael, which is why it reads easily to English and Spanish speakers alike even on first meeting. Old text, recent wave: the name has come into American use largely in the last few decades.

Gadiel first appears in US birth records in 1978 — 47 years ago. The typical Gadiel is a kid of about 7 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,500 people named Gadiel are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Gadiel
The name belongs to the oldest layer of Hebrew scripture: Gaddiel appears in Numbers as one of the twelve scouts, a chief of the tribe of Zebulun. Its first element, gad, is the same word behind the tribal name Gad, and it carried the sense of fortune or allotted portion; el is the ordinary Hebrew word for God. From the Hebrew Bible it passed into the Greek and Latin translations and then into English Bibles as Gaddiel, but unlike Gabriel or Daniel it never became a common Christian given name in Europe. Its life as a spoken first name is much more recent, and in the United States it has taken hold most strongly in Spanish-speaking communities, where the -iel ending already sits comfortably.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Hipolito test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gadiel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hipolito climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hipolito's path sketches the road Gadiel is walking now.
Gadiel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Documented in the Hebrew Bible with a clear, agreed meaning — the kind of answer parents can give when asked.
- Rhymes and patterns with Gabriel, Daniel and Ariel, so its shape is already familiar to most ears.
- Spells out phonetically in both English and Spanish, with no silent letters or doubled consonants to explain.
- Has a ready short form, Gadi, which is a real given name in Hebrew use rather than an invention.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled in American use — gah-dee-EL in Spanish, GAD-ee-el in English. Expect to correct it, or to accept both.
- It sits one letter and one syllable away from Gabriel, a far more common name. Some people will hear Gabriel, and some forms will come back that way.
- Uncommon enough that a child is likely to be the only one anywhere in the school — a pleasure for some children, a small chore of introductions for others.
