The story of Fredie
One Frederick got the rudest epitaph in the English language and never read it. The eldest son of George the Second was disliked by both his parents with a thoroughness that startled contemporaries, quarreled with them publicly for years, gathered an opposition around himself, and then died before his father did, so that the crown passed to his son instead. A satirical verse written afterwards ran through the whole family, saying that his father and mother and brother and sister were nobody's loss, and concluding that since it was only Fred, there was no more to be said. It circulated for two centuries. He was a serious patron of music and cricket and is remembered almost entirely for those eight lines.
