Where it comes from

The story of Frederich

In 1837 the German educator Friedrich Froebel opened a school for small children in Bad Blankenburg built on play, songs and building blocks, and a few years later he gave it a name, Kindergarten, 'children's garden'; German immigrants brought both the idea and the word to America. In 1858 Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won the competition to design Central Park in New York, and Olmsted went on to plan parks and campuses across the country. Frederich, with its English front and German back, was a spelling used by German-American families as their Friedrichs became Fredericks.
