Freddrick
Masculine · “Peaceful ruler”
Freddrick doubles a d and drops a vowel, and the two changes cancel. The doubling shortens the first vowel, which was already short; the missing e removes a letter nobody was saying; and the name comes out exactly where it started, one letter shorter and a great deal harder to spell.

The story of Freddrick
The most consequential American to carry the name changed everything about it except the first part. Frederick Douglass was born Bailey, took his mother's surname, changed it again on escaping, and settled finally on Douglass at the suggestion of a friend who had been reading Walter Scott; he chose the spelling with two s's deliberately, to distinguish himself from the character. Through all of that he kept the given name his mother had given him, which was Frederick Augustus, saying that he would not part with it. A man who reinvented his public identity several times over held on to the one piece of it that had come from her.

Peaceful ruler
Germanic frid, peace, and ric, ruler, the second element being the same word as the Latin rex. Peace in that context meant order enforced inside a lord's territory. Nothing in this spelling changes the meaning; the alterations are both in unstressed or already-settled positions.

Fashion outlook
Freddrick sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established across German, Italian and Spanish use.
- Fred and Rick are two short forms that sound nothing alike and both stand alone.
- The meaning is clear and can be given to a child in two words.
- Frederick is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
- The two changes cancel each other, so neither can be defended in speech.
- It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
