Chaucer's Franklin is one of the Canterbury pilgrims and is described with some care: wealthy, hospitable, sheriff of his county, and not a gentleman — the rank sat just below the gentry and above everyone else. The word comes from the Franks, whose name became the adjective frank, free, because in their kingdom only they were. Benjamin Franklin made the surname American, and the given name follows him.
