Francina is Dutch and Frisian before it is anything else, and it belongs to a family whose founder was renamed by his father. The boy was baptized Giovanni. His father was a cloth merchant who traded into France, was away in France when the child was born, and on returning began calling him the little Frenchman, which is the name that stuck and the name the whole family descends from.

The story of Francina
Almost every Francis, Frances, Francisco and Francina in the world descends from a nickname given to one child in Assisi in the twelfth century. His baptismal name was the ordinary Italian form of John. The nickname his father used displaced it entirely, and when the son became the most famous religious figure of the century the nickname became a name, spread across Europe, and generated feminine forms in every language it reached. Dutch built this one, and Dutch and Frisian families carried it to America, where it sat in the registers looking Italian to anybody who did not know better. It is an unusually clean example of how a single person can convert a common noun into a permanent piece of the name stock, and of how quickly the original sense stops being audible once that happens.
Meaning
the Frenchman, in the feminine
The parent name began as a description of nationality rather than as a name, and the feminine forms inherit that. The -ina ending here is Dutch and German rather than Italian, which is why this form is common in the Netherlands and rare in Italy. As with most nationality names, the sense stopped operating within a generation or two of the name becoming a name, and no modern bearer is being described as anything.

Pronouncing Francina
fran-SEE-nuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Dutch gives it much the same shape. English speakers sometimes say FRAN-sih-nuh with the stress at the front, which flattens it and is not how the name is said anywhere it is native.

Fashion outlook
Francina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Fran is available immediately and is one of the least demanding short forms in English.
- It is a genuine national form rather than an American elaboration, which matters in a Dutch family.
- The rhythm is even and the name is easy to say correctly on a first attempt.
- It will be assumed Italian or Spanish, and the Dutch history will have to be explained every time.
- Francine is the far more common form in English and this one will be converted into it.
- It is period-flavored in American use and has had no revival.
