The story of Floris
Floris the Fifth ruled Holland in the thirteenth century and was called, by his enemies as much as by anyone, the god of the peasants. He granted rights to towns, backed farmers against local lords in land disputes, drained and reclaimed, and gave the emerging cities charters — all of which made him popular with the people who paid taxes and deeply unpopular with the nobility whose authority he was cutting into. In twelve ninety-six a group of nobles kidnapped him, intending to hand him to the English; a rising of country people cut off the escape, and the kidnappers killed him rather than lose him. The revolt that followed destroyed several of the families involved. His son died childless the next year and the line ended.
Meaning
flowering
From the Latin flos, a flower, through the name Florentius. Dutch has used the short form as a standing men's name for centuries; American usage arrived at the same spelling independently as a women's name, and the two are unconnected.

Fashion outlook
Floris sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented and immediately understandable.
- Flo detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
- It is a genuine standing name in Dutch rather than an approximation.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- Florence, Doris and Flora will all be written for it.
- Dutch speakers will read it as unambiguously a man's name.
