Where it comes from

Our story of Florie

Early American record-keeping was oral. A clerk wrote what he was told, in the spelling he thought fit, and what he was told was the name the household actually used — so registers from that era are full of Nellies, Tillies, Sadies, Hatties and Flories who appear nowhere else under those names, and of the same person spelled three ways in three documents. The effect on a modern count of names is large and easy to misread: a short form that looks like a deliberate choice was often just a clerk transcribing a kitchen name, and a long formal name that looks rare may simply have been written down as its nickname every time.

Not established

It shortens Florence, Flora or Floria, all of which trace to the Latin verb for flowering, but the record does not say which one a given family had in mind — and in this period many of the girls entered this way had no longer form at all.

Florie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 25 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Florie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm and immediately friendly.
  • It is read correctly on sight.
  • It can stand alone or ride on a longer formal name.
What to consider
  • Flory, Florrie and Flori are all in the record nearby.
  • It reads as a nickname, so a long form will be assumed.
  • The name sits firmly in one American period.
