Florence reached English use through the Italian city rather than through the saints, and it became widely used after one nurse — herself named for the city she was born in — made it famous in the eighteen-fifties. The variants followed in the American records of the next several decades, and they divide neatly: some change a vowel and some change the ending. Florene takes the second route, using the same -ene that produced Charlene and Darlene, and the result sounds noticeably less Victorian than the original.
