The story of Flonnie
The Flora most likely to have been in an American family's mind in the nineteenth century was a Highland woman who had helped a fugitive prince escape. Flora Macdonald took Charles Edward Stuart off South Uist in an open boat with a passport for herself and a maid, the maid being the prince in a print gown and a hood, and rowed past the militia searching the islands for him. She was arrested and held in the Tower, released, married, emigrated to North Carolina, and then found herself on the opposite side of another rebellion when her husband raised Highlanders for the King against the American colonists.
Meaning
flower
The Latin noun for a blossom gave Rome a goddess, and both gave English a whole shelf of ordinary words. To flourish is to be in flower; a flourish on a page is a decorative bloom; and flour is the flower of the wheat, the finest part of the ground grain, which is why the two words were spelled the same way for centuries before English decided to separate them. Flonnie sits at the end of that line, a nineteenth-century American familiar form of a Roman word for a bud opening.
