The story of Fitz
Norman French carried filius into England as fiz and fitz, and Norman families settling in Ireland used it to build patronymic surnames exactly as the Irish did with mac. It also acquired a second and narrower use — English royal bastards were sometimes given Fitzroy, son of the king. As a given name Fitz is a modern American clipping of the longer surnames, and it appears in the records recently.
Meaning

The Nicholis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fitz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nicholis climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nicholis's path sketches the road Fitz is walking now.
Fitz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that is completely transparent once explained.
- One syllable and four letters, easy to write.
- It carries a whole family of well-known surnames behind it.
- The word literally means son of and needs a name after it to make sense, which he will notice.
- It sounds identical to the English word fits, and jokes will follow.
- It reads as a nickname to most people, which may matter on a formal document.
