The story of Fernand
The picture book appeared in nineteen thirty-six, about a bull who prefers sitting under a cork tree smelling flowers to fighting, and who is taken to the ring by mistake and simply sits down. It was published nine months before the Spanish civil war began and was immediately read as a political statement by everybody, in every direction: banned in Spain under Franco, burned in Nazi Germany, denounced as pacifist propaganda in several countries, and printed in the Soviet Union without objection. The author said repeatedly that he had written it in an afternoon to give his illustrator friend something to draw. It outsold every other American children's book of its year and is still in print, and it has attached a particular and rather good association to the name ever since.
