The story of Fern
Fern joined the plant and flower names that English speakers began giving daughters in the Victorian era, the same fashion that produced Ivy, Hazel and Myrtle. In 1952 E. B. White gave it to Fern Arable, the eight-year-old farm girl who stops her father from killing a runt piglet in the opening chapter of Charlotte's Web, raises him as Wilbur, and then sees him go to her uncle's farm, where the spider Charlotte takes over the rescue.
