The story of Ferd
Munro Leaf wrote the story of a bull who would rather sit and smell flowers than fight in about forty minutes, on a yellow legal pad, to give his illustrator friend something to draw. It came out a few months before the Spanish Civil War began and became the best-selling book in America. It was also banned in Spain under Franco, burned in Nazi Germany as degenerate propaganda, and denounced in various quarters as pacifist, communist and fascist by turns, sometimes simultaneously. Gandhi is said to have liked it. Leaf maintained for the rest of his life that it was not political and that he had simply wanted to write about a bull who sat down. After the war, copies were printed in Germany in large numbers as part of the reconstruction of children's publishing.
