rare

Felecia belongs to a whole Roman family of luck names. Felix, Felicity, Felicitas and Felicia all come from one Latin adjective, and the adjective started somewhere unexpected: felix first meant fruitful, of soil and of livestock, and only later came to mean fortunate. Good luck and a good harvest were the same idea.

Where it comes from

The story of Felecia

Felicitas was worshipped in Rome as a goddess of good fortune and had a temple, which is unusual — most Roman abstractions did not. The name family passed into Christian use through several martyrs, including a Felicitas whose feast is still kept, and spread across every Catholic language. English took Felicia in the Middle Ages and again in the nineteenth century. The e in this spelling records the ordinary reduction of an unstressed vowel: nobody says the second syllable of this name distinctly, so an i and an e are the same sound there and only the page can tell them apart.

Meaning

lucky; fruitful

Latin felix means fertile or fruitful in its oldest attested uses — applied to land, to trees, to animals — and the sense of being fortunate grew out of that, because in an agricultural society the two were not separable. The word is related to a root about suckling and nourishing that also gives fetus and female. Felicia is the feminine of Felicius. The derivation is not disputed, and the older meaning is genuinely the more interesting one.

fuh-LEE-shuh

fuh-LEE-shuh, three syllables, stress in the middle, the ci said as sh. Some give it four, fuh-LEE-see-uh, which is closer to the Latin and is heard in Spanish-speaking households. The e in the second syllable is unstressed and changes nothing.

Felecia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1962, with 399 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Felecia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, cheerful, and comes with a genuinely surprising older sense.
  • It sits in a large and well-documented Latin name family with several living members.
  • Lisha and Feli are both usable short forms in two different traditions.
What to consider
  • Felicia is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it constantly.
  • Because the difference is inaudible, defending the e is a purely visual argument.
  • The syllable count varies between English and Spanish, so a bilingual child answers to two versions.
