Fate is not the English word. It is what the American South cut Lafayette down to, taking the last syllable instead of the first, and it was common enough in the nineteenth century to appear in the records in its own right, alongside a great many boys christened Lafayette outright.

Where it comes from

The story of Fate

The man the full name honors was nineteen when he did the thing he is remembered for. A French aristocrat with a commission and no combat experience, he heard about the American revolt at a dinner, decided to join it, and when the French government forbade it he bought his own ship and sailed anyway, arriving to offer his services for nothing. He was wounded at Brandywine, wintered at Valley Forge, and became close enough to Washington that the relationship shaped both their lives. Fifty years later he returned as an old man and toured all twenty-four states to enormous crowds, and towns, counties and children were named after him everywhere he went. The American South took the tail of the name and made a boy's name out of it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

As a clipping of Lafayette, the name has no meaning of its own; the French surname behind it comes from a place name and is not securely explained. As the English word, it would mean something a family almost certainly did not intend. The clipping is the likelier account by a wide margin.

Pronouncing Fate

FAYT

One syllable, said exactly as the English word. The full name is stressed on its last syllable in American English, which is why that syllable is the one that survived the clipping.

Fate sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 29 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Fate sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, four letters, and nothing ambiguous about how it is said.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • The full name behind it is honorable, documented and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • It is spelled identically to an ordinary English word about destiny, and everybody will assume that is the source.
  • The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
