Ezio
Masculine · “Most often read as "eagle”
Ezio is the Italian descendant of the Roman name Aetius, worn by a late-antique general and later by an eighteenth-century opera libretto that composers set again and again. Four letters, three syllables, and a middle consonant that clicks in Italian and hums in English — it is a small name with a long approach.

The story of Ezio
The name begins as Greek Aetios and passes into Latin as Aetius, a Roman family name best known from the fifth-century general who faced Attila's forces in Gaul. Italian softened it into Ezio, and the eighteenth century gave it a second life: Metastasio's libretto Ezio was set by a long line of composers, keeping the name in theaters across Europe. In modern Italy it stayed in steady, unshowy use, and it reached many American ears through Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the Renaissance-Florentine hero of the Assassin's Creed games — which is why the name's American wave is such a recent one.

Most often read as "eagle"
The common reading traces Aetius back to Greek aetos, "eagle." Other reference works treat Aetius simply as an inherited Roman family name whose derivation was already lost by the time it was written down. Both readings are taken seriously; neither has won.

The Masaru test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ezio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Masaru climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Masaru's path sketches the road Ezio is walking now.
Ezio is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Short, phonetic and consistently spelled — four letters that people can write down correctly after hearing them once.
- A documented line back to Latin Aetius and Greek Aetios, so the name has centuries of record behind a very recent American arrival.
- Sits comfortably in Italian, Portuguese and English mouths, and shares its vowel-final shape with familiar names like Enzo, Elio and Dario.
- Carried by a repeatedly set eighteenth-century opera libretto, which kept it alive in European theaters long before it reached the US.
- The z is the sticking point: Italian says "ts," American English usually says "z." Expect to choose one and repeat it, and to hear the other version anyway.
- Its American visibility owes a great deal to a video game character, so it may read as of-a-particular-moment to people who know the games — and mean nothing at all to people who don't.
- There is very little to shorten. Ez and Ezi exist, but a child who wants a nickname may not find one waiting.
- A child named Ezio will likely be the only one in the school, which cuts both ways: no confusion in the classroom, and a lifetime of saying it twice.
