Jahziel
Masculine · “God apportions”
Jahziel is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,252 boys against 15 girls since 1880.
Jahziel comes out of the genealogies of the Hebrew Bible, one of the four sons of Naphtali named in Genesis and again in Chronicles — a name written down thousands of years ago and then left almost untouched for centuries. It has the same -el ending as Gabriel, Uriel and Ezekiel, the syllable that means God, but arrives at it by an unusual road. In American records it is a recent arrival, still on its way up.

Jahziel first appears in US birth records in 1994 — 31 years ago. The typical Jahziel is a kid of about 4 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,200 people named Jahziel are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Jahziel
The name belongs to the lists of Jacob's descendants: Jahzeel, firstborn of Naphtali, counted among those who went down into Egypt, and repeated generations later in the census of Chronicles as Jahziel. Unlike Joseph or Benjamin, it was never picked up by medieval Europe, so it survived only on the page — a name read aloud in genealogy chapters rather than given to children. Its modern life begins with the American habit of returning to the less-traveled corners of scripture for names, and it is strongest in the Southwest and Florida, where the Spanish-language form Jaziel of 1 Crónicas has a following of its own. That double route, English Bible and Spanish Bible, is why the name turns up in several spellings at once.

JAH-zee-el
English speakers usually give it three or four syllables with the stress up front. In Spanish-speaking households the J is often sounded closer to an H and the stress falls at the end: hahs-YEL. Both are current, so expect to state your preference.

The Laurent test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jahziel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Laurent climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Laurent's path sketches the road Jahziel is walking now.

The trade-off
- Anchored in a documented biblical text, with the bearer named in both Genesis and Chronicles.
- Sits comfortably beside the familiar -el names — Gabriel, Uriel, Ezekiel — so the ending needs no explanation.
- Works across English and Spanish, with Jaziel as a ready-made counterpart form.
- Rare enough that a child is very unlikely to share it with a classmate, while still being a real historical name rather than a coinage.
- Four close spellings circulate — Jahziel, Jahzeel, Jaziel and the separate biblical name Jahaziel — so expect a lifetime of spelling it out and correcting forms.
- The pronunciation genuinely splits between English and Spanish habits. Deciding early which one your family uses saves the child from doing that negotiation themselves.
- The scriptural Jahziel appears only in name lists; there is no episode, no speech, no story attached to him. Parents hoping for a narrative figure behind the name will not find one.
- Its American wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is a child. There is no adult generation of Jahziels yet to make the name feel established.
