Everlena puts an English adverb in front of a borrowed ending. Ever is one of the oldest words in the language and means always; the ending came off the back of a set of European names; and the two were joined in the American South before the federal records began.

Where it comes from

The story of Everlena

The word ever is doing more work in English than anybody notices. It is in every, which is ever plus each; in never, which is not ever; in whatever and whenever and however, where it turns a question word into a general one; in forever; and in the old-fashioned everso. Old English had it as aefre, and its own origin is not certain, though a connection to a word for an age or a lifetime is the usual proposal. A name built on it is therefore built on a word that has been in continuous use for twelve hundred years and has never been anything but a small function word, which is a strange thing to be named after and a perfectly cheerful one.

Always, plus an ending

The front is the ordinary English word and is legible; the back is naming material with no sense of its own. Whether a family meant the adverb or simply liked the sound cannot be recovered, and the compound as a whole does not say anything.

Four syllables with the stress on the third. The first two are reduced almost to nothing in ordinary speech, which is why the record also holds Everleana and Everlina.

Everlena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Everlena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lena and Evie are two short forms that are both entirely current.
  • Half the name is an ordinary English word and needs no explaining.
  • The rhythm is easy and every sound is available to an English speaker.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is a great deal of name and will be shortened by other people at once.
  • Everlina and Everleen exist for closely related sounds.
  • It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
