The story of Everest
Andrew Waugh named the peak for his predecessor in 1865; Everest objected, and pronounced his own name EEV-rest, not EV-er-est. Chomolungma, the Tibetan name, is generally read as 'goddess mother of the world'. The given name appears in American records for both sexes from the 2010s and is in current use.
Meaning
Not established
The mountain is named for George Everest, Surveyor General of India, whose surname is from a Norman French place name, Devérest. Everest himself objected, noting the name could not be written in Hindi. The Tibetan Chomolungma and Nepali Sagarmatha are the older names. The surname's own meaning is not established.

The Kathia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Everest's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kathia climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kathia's path sketches the road Everest is walking now.
Everest sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Everest is headed
Everest should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

- The mountain is recognized everywhere on earth.
- The surname's own meaning is not established.
- The naming of the mountain is a colonial act with older names displaced.
- Three syllables make it moderately long for everyday use.
