Evelena
Feminine · “life”
Evelena joins two endings to one front, which is a step further than most compounds go. The base is Eve or Eva; the middle adds the ending that produces Evelyn; and the back adds another that produces Lena, so the name has three layers of suffix on a two-letter root. The name it passes through was a man's name first.

The story of Evelena
Evelyn was a surname, and before that a man's name: it comes from a Norman personal name, was carried by an English family who gave it to sons for generations, and appears in English records as a man's name well into the nineteenth century. The diarist everybody quotes was one. Its crossing to women happened late and completely, and by the twentieth century the masculine use had effectively stopped in America, though it lingered in Britain. Building a further ending onto it, as this name does, is a decision that only makes sense once the crossing is finished: nobody adds a feminine suffix to a name they still hear as a man's.

life
If the base is Eve, the Hebrew word is connected to a root about living and the reading is the traditional one, though the derivation given in Genesis is a pun rather than an etymology. Evelyn's own origin is separate and disputed, and it may not descend from Eve at all. So the layers do not all point the same way.
How the name formed
- A short Hebrew name about living
- Evelyn as a Norman surname and a man's name
- Crossing to women in the nineteenth century
- Evelena, with a further ending added
Pronouncing Evelena
ev-uh-LEE-nuh
Four syllables with the stress on the third. Each ending adds a syllable, which is why the name is twice the length of its root and why everybody outside the family will shorten it.
