Where it comes from

The story of Eulalie

The cathedral cloister in Barcelona has a pond, palm trees and a flock of white geese, and there are always thirteen of them because the saint is said to have been thirteen when she was killed. The birds are noisy, entirely unbothered by tourists, and have been part of the cathedral for a very long time; one explanation offered is that geese also make excellent watchmen, which Rome discovered the hard way. During the city's festival for her in February the whole neighborhood fills with processions, human towers and giant figures. A cloister full of geese is an unusual memorial and it is a great deal more alive than a plaque.

Meaning

well-spoken

The Greek name joins the prefix meaning well to a root about speaking, the same one in eulogy. The reading is settled and has not been disputed.

Eulalie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 24 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Eulalie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and pleasant to explain: well-spoken.
  • It has forms in Spanish, Catalan, French and Portuguese, so it travels well.
  • Lalie and Lali are both available as short forms and both are soft and usable.
What to consider
  • Eulalia is the commoner spelling in Spanish-speaking households, so this version will be adjusted.
  • It is three syllables of unfamiliar vowels for an American ear and will be spelled aloud often.
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation in the United States.
