The story of Eugena
He was small, awkward, plainly not a soldier to look at, and the French king reportedly dismissed him as fit for the church. He left Paris without permission, took service with the Austrians, and over the following decades broke an Ottoman army at Zenta, took Belgrade, and shared command with Marlborough at Blenheim in the campaign that stopped French domination of Europe. Napoleon later listed him among the seven greatest commanders in history. He built two palaces in Vienna, collected books and paintings on an enormous scale, and never married. The refusal is documented and the career that followed it is the largest counter-argument to a first impression on record.

Fashion outlook
Eugena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three syllables is easier for daily use than four and the change is real rather than cosmetic.
- Gena and Ena are two short forms that both stand alone as names.
- The meaning is transparent and can be given to a child in two words.
- Eugenia is the standard spelling and the missing letter will be restored by strangers.
- The name reads as antique in American ears and has not begun to come back.
- The root is shared with a word for a discredited nineteenth-century science, which some people will raise.
