Our story of Etty
Ours, offered as ours. The book of Esther is the only book of the Hebrew Bible that never mentions God, and its heroine has two names — Hadassah, a myrtle, and Esther, which looks Persian or Babylonian. That doubleness is the point of the story: a woman living under one name in a foreign court and another among her own people. Etty comes off the front of it, or off Henrietta, and carries the sound rather than the argument.

star; or home ruler
Esther is generally read from Persian setareh, a star, or connected to the goddess Ishtar; her Hebrew name in the text is Hadassah, a myrtle. Henrietta descends from Germanic haim, a home, and ric, a ruler. The short form carries either.

The Dante test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Etty's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dante climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dante's path sketches the road Etty is walking now.
